Finding My Voice; Campaigning against Rape and Defilement in my community

Rape and defilement have gone unpunished for far too long.

I firmly believe that silence
is complicity, which is why I chose to actively support the Mulika national campaign. The
Mulika national campaign was conducted through social media and sports (basketball).
This journey has been enlightening, engaging, and incredibly influential; it has shown
the tremendous power of community education in fighting against Rape and Defilement
and in creating a safer community. I want to use this blog to share the lessons I took
away, and the hope that keeps us fighting for safety and justice.

Why this campaign mattered to me
The pervasive issue of sexual violence has been very heartbreaking and infuriating. The
stories of victims weighs heavily in my mind. The number of cases on rape and
defilement in Kenya are horrifying and the silence that often surrounds these crimes is
even more chilling.

Being called in to be one of the social media influencers of his campaign was an eye-
opening opportunity for me on matters regarding rape and defilement in my community.
It was an opportunity to lend my vice to a chorus demanding change, justice and
protection for the vulnerable.

How I participated;
I participated in the campaign both physically through basketball and also on social
media. My participation was simple but I truly believe that every conversation, every
post and share adds to the cumulative impact. Here’s what I did:

– Educated myself
I took time in understanding Rape and Defilement, the impacts of Rape and
Defilement on victims and how it has affected the community at large. I was able
to understand the importance of immediate reporting of rape and defilement
cases.

– Shared information
Posting: I posted posts sharing facts on Rape and Defilement and also posts
encouraging victims to speak up and fight for justice.
One on One Talk: I had discussions with my friends, family members and
neighbors on the issue of Rape and Defilement.

– Engaged respectfully
Online engagement: I responded to comments that were made on my posts.
Fan engagement: I had conversations with the basketball fans on matter to do
with Rape and Defilement. Through this I was able to understand different views
on Rape and Defilement from various people in the community thus creating
awareness.

– Community meetings
Youth Meeting: I also attended a youth meeting where we were educated on
Rape and Defilement. We were able to share different views on Rape and
Defilement and the challenges we as the youth face regarding Rape and
Defilement in our community.

Nyumba Kumi Leaders Meeting: I attended the Nyumba Kumi Leaders’ meeting.
These are community leaders that help the local police in maintaining peace and
security in the community. Through this meeting I was able to understand the
roles and challenges of Nyumba Kumi Leaders on the management of rape and
defilement hence highlighting the failures of the community leaders in managing
rape and defilement in the community.

Impacts of the campaign

The campaign managed to:

Educate: Through the youth meetings, team and fan engagement and online
posts, various people have been educated on Rape and Defilement, the
processes and importance of reporting Rape and Defilement cases therefore
helping in the management of Rape and Defilement.

Raise Awareness: Discussions around Rape and Defilement, often whispered or
ignored, were brought to the forefront of public discourse.
Foster Community: This campaign has fostered community cohesion
encouraging everyone in the community to take responsibility in managing rape
and defilement.

Conclusion
This campaign was a powerful reminder that change is possible, but it demands
sustained effort from every one of us. It calls for:
– Support for Survivors: Ensuring they have access to medical, legal and
psychological assistance.
– Increased Awareness: Educating ourselves and others about consent and
respect.
– Challenging societal norms: Dismantling the cultures of silence, fear and victim-
blaming.
– Accountability for perpetrators: Advocating for swift and fair justice.
My participation in this campaign was a profoundly humbling and empowering
experience. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of community, and the absolute
necessity of standing up for what is right.

Let’s continue to use our voices, our platforms, and our collective power to build
a world free from the horrors of rape and defilement. Let’s create a future where
every individual feels safe, respected, and protected.
